This mineral was named after avid gem collector and American financier J.P Morgan. Chief gemologist for Tiffany and Company, George Kunz suggested naming the new discovery after his dear friend as a thank you for his financial support of arts and sciences. Morganite contains a range of shades from pink to orange-pink. What causes the color in morganite is the traces of manganese found within.
