First discovered by J.G Wallerious in the year 1747, Selenite was named after Selene the Greek goddess of the moon. The name was in reference to Selenite’s pale color of blue and white, which resembled that of the moon. Greeks greatly admired the beauty Selenite had to offer, they appreciated it so much so they had windows made of the stone. Windows made of selenite were created in order to amplify the moonlight for a much clearer view.

Selenite Crystal is a known member of the crystallized gypsum mineral variety. It forms as an evaporation within salt flats, hot springs, caves, and clay beds. This abundant mineral can be found in many locations around the world such as Morocco, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Greece, Madagascar, Canada, and the United States. In fact, the largest Selenite cave is located in Chihuahua, Mexico and is found 1,000ft under a mountain.

In history Selenite was known to be used by many ancient civilizations, such as Aztecs, Mayans, Egyptians, and Native Americans. For example, ancient Aztec civilizations often utilized Selenite for their belief it would protect them against evil spirits. Ancient Egyptians were known to place Selenite within the tomb of their loved one in order to serve as a guide to the other side as well as help in protecting the spirits soul.
